I try not to groan and show the trepidation I’m feeling on my face. I let the other girls lead and step out into the garden last, trying to look as if I’m completely focused on the task at hand rather than Matthew Miller approaching us.

“Hi, girls,” he greets us in a friendly tone. The others greet back, but I keep my gaze on the ground.

I feel his eyes on me as he assesses my mood. Frankly, I’m not exactly in high spirits at the moment. Recalling him running out of my room like that turns the slowly swirling fury inside me into a whirlwind of negative emotions. What makes me even angrier is that I’m indebted to him considering he’s making my garden whole again—for free.

“Uh, you might want to—” he starts at seeing Kendra’s unfitting wardrobe, but Leo beats him to it.

“No, she might not. Don’t even bother.” Matthew hesitates but shrugs. “So, where do we start?”

“Let’s get rid of that tree first. I already cut it in small pieces. Put them in the wheelbarrow and unload them in front of the house—I’ll bring my car trailer from home next week and take everything to the recycling center. Leave the heavy ones for me. Christina let us borrow her shredder for the smaller branches. All clear?”

We all nod and start to work. I deliberately try to keep a large distance from Matthew which doesn’t escape the others’ notice if the strange looks Kendra and Skyla shoot me are anything to go by. I don’t catch their gazes to avoid awkward questions I can’t answer.

It quickly becomes clear that Kendra prefers working on the shredder with Skyla handing her branches while Leo and I carry the lighter pieces of wood, and Ruby collects all the remaining debris. Now and then Matthew tries to catch my gaze, but I stay adamant. I’m glad he will return to Tampa for the next few days. I need time to get this man out of my head which doesn’t work if only a couple of feet separate us permanently.

“Hey, do you think this fits in there?” Kendra shouts over the clanging noise of the shredder. We turn to see her holding a thick branch that got chopped in the middle of a particularly gnarly spot, making one end look like a cock’s tip.

“Don’t know. You’re the expert when it comes to chopping off dicks,” Leo replies. The others crack with laughter, but I hold back. I don’t feel like cracking sexually-related jokes at the moment.

I bend down to retrieve a wooden plank, but the rough surface scrapes against my bandage, so I try to lift it with only my uninjured hand.

“Take these,” a deep voice sounds from behind me, and I startle at Matthew suddenly being so close. I turn around as he hands me a pair of work gloves. “Those are full of splinters.”

I debate declining the offer, but I don’t want to ruin my bandage and therefore give Matthew a reason to tend to me a second time.
